One old Coastie remembers all
the good times and the hard
times. Good times were working
law enforcement on the Colorado
River and Lake Powell.
What do you remember about your
service in the Coast Guard. Was it
good or not so good. A lot of things
happen in life that we don’t like
much, but over all most things are
good.

The hard times were being in
Vietnam 1968 during the Tet
Offensive and staring down the
barrel of 3 inch recoilless rifle
on an enemy fishing boat
entering territorial waters to
supply arms and ammunition.
I joined the Coast Guard right out of high school, the events of the day had the Draft going
on and many young men were being called up to military service and at that point you went
where they sent you mostly the Army. I chose the Coast guard because I wanted to help
someone else that needed help more than I did. I got to meet a lot of new people from all
walks of life. We had lawyers, hells angels, mechanics, construction workers to name a few.
Boot camp was a real eye opener, with all the things you needed to learn. And now boot camp has
changed even more with all the new things going on in the world such as survival techniques and
equipment used.
